How to keep a smell-proof bag working

Keep a smell-proof bag working by wiping it dry, never machine washing it, and airing the lining in dry, moving air every few months. Detergent and moisture are what ruin a carbon lining.

Never machine wash it

Carbon liners do not like detergent and really do not like a washing machine. Both leave residue in the pores, and once the pores are blocked the lining stops adsorbing odour.

Wipe, then dry completely

Wipe the inside with a dry cloth after use. If something spills, use a barely damp cloth with water only, then leave the bag open in a dry room until there is no moisture left at all.

Refresh the lining by airing it

Unzip the bag fully and leave it in moving air for a day. Warm, dry air helps the pores release what they collected. Repeat every few months and the lining will outlast the zipper.

Look after the closure

The seal does half the work, so keep the zipper track free of crumbs and dust and close it fully. Do not force it around a bag packed to the brim.
